George Orwell s Childhood And The Situations - 2494 Words

In the laws of physics there can be no movement without an acting force. In the early twentieth century many travesties went unnoticed due to idleness of the people. George Orwell was one of the first writers to ever become fully involved in his writings and take action to discover the truth. Through his actions as a writer Orwell started a chain of events and continue to inspire political policies present today. The aim of this paper is to analyze how George Orwell’s childhood and the situations in which he placed himself during his life contributed to his writing skills while exposing the truths of government issues, ultimately allowing him to become one of the most influential writers of the twentieth century. George Orwell was†¦show more content†¦Once his family had settled, Richard Blair returned to India alone to continue working, leaving Ida and her three children in England (Rossi 9). Eric Blair was a troubled youth, often telling fibs and playing with im aginary friends, making him unpopular during his schooling. This is the direct result of him being the middle child of the three, with an age gap of five years between each child along with the absence of his father (Orwell Why I Write 1). At a young age Eric displayed aspirations of becoming a writer by writing poems and excelling in school. Eric was a talented student, winning a scholarship to St. Cyprian’s, a prestigious boarding school located in southern England (Agathocleous 9). His time spent at this school was rather unpleasant and Blair reflects on his time spent at St. Cyprian’s in an essay called â€Å"Such, Such Were the Joy’s,† in which he describes the traumatizing disciplinary systems and the conditions that the young boys lived in while attending preparatory school. His childhood experiences coupled with scarring early school memories caused him to develop a strong hate for authority. Along with the harsh conditions of the school came snobbery from wealthy kids who would single out the non wealthy kids and bombard them with questions (Agathocleous 10), as Orwell later

Era of the Disposable Worker Essay - 727 Words

Era of the Disposable Worker? Rachel Walker Kaplan University MT 302-03 Organizational Behavior Professor Pam DeLotell May 20, 2013 1.) To what extent can individual business decisions (as opposed to economic forces) explain deterioration in working conditions for many workers? To me it seems the poverty-stricken economy is what leads to the deterioration in individual businesses. The poor economy is making it difficult for the business to draw in a steady income and therefor they need to make decisions on what to do to keep the doors to the business open and keep their heads above water. That’s when they start doing layoffs and budget cuts for the business. Employees end up with reduced hours, pay cuts, small pay raises and†¦show more content†¦Business leaders need to focus more on leadership skills and the true meaning of leadership. They should be focusing on driving their people and giving them a genuine purpose. Finding purpose and worth is a respective journey embedded in the individual’s day-to-day involvement in the business. Worrying about what the shareholders gain will not give individuals the true meaning of employment. This is being said about those employees who are truly engaged in the business. Employee engagement is what is going to drive performance. The task for corporations is to generate businesses where employees are united and engaged to a noticeably modular stratagem. 4.) What do you think the likely impact of growth of temporary employment relationships will be for employee attitudes and behaviors? How would you develop a measurement system to evaluate the impact of corporate downsizing and temporary job assignments on employees? I can see where some employees may have a negative attitude or behavior towards temporary employment positions. They feel this way because they know it is only for a period of time and then they are right back to square one. However, not everyone will see it this way. Others will look at it as a paycheck and will be extremely happy just to be working even if it is only temporary. The term Artificial Intelligence comes to mind whe Essay Example For Students

The term Artificial Intelligence comes to mind whe Essay n thinking about Computer Science, but what does it really mean? Artificial Intelligence is an interdisciplinary field that includes computer science, physiology, and philosophy. The combination of natural language (speaking like a human), to recognizing complex patterns in handwriting is one of the main goals most artificial intelligence scientist hope to achieve. Artificial intelligence was first coined in 1956 in a Dartmouth University Conference on technology. John McCarthy considered to be the Father of Artificial Intelligence, organized this conference to bring together scientist with interest in machine intelligence (Dumm, Snitzer, and Dyess). Artificial intelligence has been on the experimental end of Computer Science sense this groundbreaking conference. One of the most fascinating areas in Artificial intelligence is Neural Networks. A neural network is a digitized model of the human brain simulated in the binary memory of a computer system (Garis). There are many properties that make up the neural network in relation to the modern computer. Neural networks have properties which are used for feature extraction, association, optimization, functions, and modeling (Gurney and Wright). There are just as many, if not more properties of neural networks in relation to the brain that need to be understood by scientist. Neuroscientist and psychologists believe, if computer models can be engineered to the level as a human brain, then questions about the neural make up of the gray matter in the brains of humans could be answered (Gurney and Wright). Although many of the characteristics of the human brain remain unknown, its the complex network of neurons which give humans intelligent qualities. A neuron alone does not signify intelligence but, when grouped together with electrical signals, passing through the brain it becomes similar to a computers digital networking (Dumm, Snitzer, and Dyess). The fundamentals of how neural networks make the brain function, was proposed by two mathematicians named Warren McCulloch and Walter Pitts. Their hypothesis was based on experiments with neurons and that they might be considered devices for processing binary numbers (Dumm, Snitzer, and Dyess). Binary numbers were represented as 1s and 0s and were important mathematical and computational process for inputting and outputting data. This link alone was the basis for computer-simulated neural networks. McCulloch and Pitts used principles based on George Booles postulates concerning how the brain makes true/false decisions. This produced Boolean algebra and the Boolean expression is now used as a reserve word in many programming languages to code true or false variable expressions (Dumm, Snitzer, and Dyess). Using the ideas of the brain feedback theory McCulloch and Pitts, described a loop that exists between the senses, brain, and muscles. This introduced the conclusion that Memory could be defined as the signals in a closed loop neurons (Dumm, Snitzer, and Dyess). These conclusions all lead to the theory of artificial neural networks. There are many implications when realizing a world of computers, which inevitable are smarter than its creator. Moral dilemmas in many areas of science will be questioned. Already, in present day many of us depend on computers in our everyday lives to drive us to work or safeguard our house. Also, there are many computer programs that utilized artificial intelligence and neural networks in todays high-level logic languages. Some examples of these programs are Prolog and Lisp. John McCarthy also created Lisp in 1958. Prolog revealed itself in 1972 (Dumm, Snitzer, and Dyess). Both these languages are still used today. The 1980s hurt artificial intelligence research. For a lack of demands from companies, the industry lost close to a half a billion dollars in research funds (Dumm, Snitzer, and Dyess). Sense these early origins of artificial intelligence, scientists worry that a machine could be created and be capable of evolution and extreme intelligence beyond human comprehension. Issues of whether or not to build this thinking machine will inevitable a result of backlash from society, military, and the government. Artificial intelligence and neural networks are on the pioneering edge of computer science. .uc1c9ad54af895f7ad042743ebbfe8ebb , .uc1c9ad54af895f7ad042743ebbfe8ebb .postImageUrl , .uc1c9ad54af895f7ad042743ebbfe8ebb .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uc1c9ad54af895f7ad042743ebbfe8ebb , .uc1c9ad54af895f7ad042743ebbfe8ebb:hover , .uc1c9ad54af895f7ad042743ebbfe8ebb:visited , .uc1c9ad54af895f7ad042743ebbfe8ebb:active { border:0!important; } .uc1c9ad54af895f7ad042743ebbfe8ebb .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uc1c9ad54af895f7ad042743ebbfe8ebb { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uc1c9ad54af895f7ad042743ebbfe8ebb:active , .uc1c9ad54af895f7ad042743ebbfe8ebb:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uc1c9ad54af895f7ad042743ebbfe8ebb .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uc1c9ad54af895f7ad042743ebbfe8ebb .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uc1c9ad54af895f7ad042743ebbfe8ebb .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uc1c9ad54af895f7ad042743ebbfe8ebb .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uc1c9ad54af895f7ad042743ebbfe8ebb:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uc1c9ad54af895f7ad042743ebbfe8ebb .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uc1c9ad54af895f7ad042743ebbfe8ebb .uc1c9ad54af895f7ad042743ebbfe8ebb-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uc1c9ad54af895f7ad042743ebbfe8ebb:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Hidden Intellectualism Essay Advanced-level languages and computer interfaces owe their very existence to all areas of artificial intelligence research. Why are Henderson and Huang so upset? Should they be? Anderson and Huang were upset because Thad Simcoe and Avi Rothman intentionally wanted to claim the technology as the inventors. In their meeting with Catherine Huang they did not tell her that they were working on a business plan to bring the remote soil pH sensing approach to commercialization. In their discussion with Catherines colleagues they posed as the invertors. They even went as far as talking to their attorney friend about carving out a specific application of SpudSpy rom the original patent belonging to Catherine and Anderson. This goes to tell that either, Thad and his partner didnt know how unethical their intentions were or they were blinded by over ambition. The students, fortunately, have passion for the idea, so they have the charisma and spirit to make it happen. Because lets face the facts Catherine has not been able to move forward with this idea, she needs a team. I believe she would make a great team with Thad and Avi. 3. What is your assessment of Cohens role so far? What would you recommend to Cohen for his next steps? What are his options? Cohen is doing a great Job with his entrepreneurial class. His method of teaching the class is motivating. The students strive to produce a business plan that would actually convince a venture capitalist to part with his money. It not only exposes the students but also opens doors of opportunities for them. In regards to the situation, Cohen should arrange a meet between Anderson, Catherine, Thad and Avi. Try and settle the case amicably, convince Catherine and Anderson to work with the Students, pointing out the fact that the project has generated broad interest and possibility of ew funding for the engineering school if it turns out to be a success. To avoid this sort of thing happening again, first all business school students should read about this case and the follow up. During these kinds of projects students should check with their instructor before and after any correspondence they have with the inventors, parties of interest and other stakeholders. This way the instructor would know if and when they doing anything that is unethical or against regulations and pull them back.

Words such as describe, explain, and outline often accompany short answer questions. More commonly at tertiary level, you will be asked to express your point of view. Concept mapping works well when brainstorming. An initial plan will help guide your reading and note-taking. However, it is more likely that you will need to research the question in more detail before you can go much further. You will be required to read widely. Some subject outlines will advise you on how much and what to read. Reading requirements will also vary between subjects and the topics. Some topics may require a detailed analysis of a small number of texts; yet it is rarely sufficient to read only one or two books on a particular topic. A rule of thumb for first year, first semester, subjects is to include at least five sources. Another rule of thumb is to choose sources published within the past 5-10 years. Some assignments call for a mix of sources, such as books, journals, swappers, and/or websites.Journals provide more recent information, but it is often specific information. Another rule bathtub for first year students is to start with the textbook to gain an overview of the topic, then move to specifics. New students might find researching using a large library and databases a little daunting. The library has provided an online tutorial called Webbed to help you. Otherwise, contact a librarian and seek help. Do not spend hours agonizing and getting nowhere. After having found the information you are looking for, your task is to take effective notes.Do not rewrite the text, but try to make notes in your own words, and always remember to take the full reference including any page numbers. You will need this information if you decide to use this research in your essay. Some students seem to get caught on this step, research. They gather more and more research and ultimately find themselves with too many notes, confused and discouraged. If this is you, start your plan, then move to the next step. Once you get something onto paper you are likely to feel you are back in control, can see some progress for your efforts and any further research is likely to be more focused and hence productive.Step 3: Plan You are now ready to plan your essay, or if you had an initial plan, return to it and add any new points or delete any that you have now discovered are irrelevant. Planning however does not simply mean randomly gathering information to support your argument. Planning involves grouping or categorizing information into a series of points and determining a logical order in which to present your points. Your aim is to develop a logical, coherent and transparent structure. The following steps will help you do this: Formulate your thesis: Did you start your research with a thesis?Has it changed now hat you have researched the question further? Or have you developed a thesis now that you have researched your topic? What is your thesis or viewpoint? If you didnt have a viewpoint before you started your research you should have one now to help guide your response to the question. Remember, your thesis will help you structure your essay. Decide which points you wish to include in support of your viewpoint or thesis Check to see if there is a logical grouping of ideas or points Decide on an order of presentation.Order could be determined by, for example, level of importance, time in place, the question, geography or personal preference, UT it should follow the order indicated in the introduction Note if there are any points that refute your viewpoint that you should address Delete any poi nts that you now consider irrelevant. Page 6 of 11 earning Skills @ CSS This is when you can start making use of headings. Give each point you are going to include a heading. Now list these in the order in which you will present them in your essay. Does your order make sense? If not, change it. Assuming research leads to the thesis below, an essay plan for the following question might look like this: The ALAI (university admissions index) is a liable predictor of success at university. (Discuss) Essay structure Introduction Number of paragraphs 1 Content Orientate the reader to the general topic Identify the focus or purpose of the essay Outline the scope, that is, the points to be covered, in the body Thesis: The AU is a reliable predictor of success at university Body Maybe 6-8 in this simple essay What is success? Academic achievement) What is involved in order to achieve a good ALAI? How does this relate to academic success? What does the research say about the correlation between the AJAX and success? Studies? Are there any exceptions? Do they provide an effective counter argument? Conclusion Summary of main points Reaffirm thesis Step 4: Write Refer to the section on essay structure Follow your plan. Make use of headings if this helps you. Sometimes turning a heading into a question helps students keep to the point. Remove them from your final draft if traditional essay format is wanted. Take care if you change terms used in the question. For example, if the term used in your question is success and you substitute this with the term achievement, the meaning may be quite different. Remember to pay attention to your topic sentences. Make it clear to he reader what point you are making in each paragraph and why. You know what you mean, but did you tell the reader? Relate the points you are making to the question/your thesis. At the very least you will know what questions to clarify with your lecturer. Basic essay structure 1. Introduction The introduction to your essay is an important paragraph. It is the first thing the reader sees. A good introduction should 1 . Orientate the deader to the general topic 2. Identify the focus or purpose of the essay 3. Outline the scope, that is, the points to be covered, noting any limitations and 4.Finish by identifying the thesis. An introduction is usually one paragraph, although this is not always the case, particularly with long essays. Some students define key terms in the introduction. Others signal within the scope that key terms will be defined in the essay. If this is case, do this at the beginning of the body of the essay. The decision about where to define key terms is probably guided by the length of the definition discussion. A simple definition may sit well in the introduction. A protracted definition may be distracting and better dealt with in the body Of the essay. Mints 1 and 2 above are determined by your essay question. Point 3 will be guided by the question, your research and the thesis. Point 4 is important. It identifies what you have learnt, your argument or viewpoint. The thesis will drive your essay. More information on thesis statements follows: A thesis statement is your line of argument, your viewpoint. You might agree, disagree or perhaps qualify your argument in some way so that it agrees with part of the question. For example, you might be asked to discuss this statement: The (JAW (university admissions index) is a reliable predictor of success at university. Some students may argue that it is. Some may argue that it isnt. Others may argue that it is a useful but not reliable predictor. A critical thinker might challenge the concept of success and argue that the ALAI has little to do with success in its broad sense. Page 8 of 1 1 Learning Skills @ CSS In other words, there may be a number of thesis statements or viewpoints that relate to a question. What is important is tattoo support your viewpoint with evidence based on your research. Your thesis is an expression of your learning.Thesis statements generally grow out of a consideration of many viewpoints within your research. Thesis statements can develop at any point in the research, planning and writing of your essay. If you decide on your thesis statement before your begin your research, take care that you remain open to the many points of view you will read about. Most students probably develop their thesis statement at the end of their research. The thesis statement and the topic sentences (opening sentence for each arcograph) provide the framework for your essay. For the writer, the thesis statement: serves as a planning tool. Alps the writer determine the papers real focus and clarify the relationships between ideas. Becomes a hook on which the writer can hang the sub-theses or the topic sentences that present evidence in support of the argument. Anticipates questions about the topic and provides the unifying thread between pieces of information. ( Ref: http://www. Wise. Du/writing/Handbook/Disentanglement. HTML ) Your thesis is a statement, not another question and sits in the introduction. An introduction containing these features might look like this: 2. Body The body of an essay is where you develop your essay. This occurs in a series of paragraphs with each paragraph logically flowing to the next. Thus a good use of topic sentences and correct paragraph structure are important. The first sentence of each paragraph, often referred to as a topic sentence, introduces the paragraph by stating and summarizing the main point being made in the paragraph. Topic sentences often contain transition signals, which aid in the smooth transition from one paragraph to the next. This first entente should inform the reader of the point you are making and how this paragraph relates to the question. In fact, if the reader were to scan your topic sentences, they should be able to obtain a sketch of the entire essay. This sketch should show the logical progression of the points you are making. Absence of topic sentences leaves the reader wondering what you are trying to say and why, ultimately confusing the reader. Page 9 of 11 Signposting is not limited to topic sentences. Signposting within your paragraph also aids the reader. The following example well illustrates the effective use of signposts (folded). Finally, as with all models of learning, information processing has limitations. For example, the model implies that thinking and learning occur in a serial (linear) processing form, whereas we know that thinking and learning are more complex than this (it is a recursive process). Furthermore, the model fails to take into account motivation, emotions and social interaction as elements affecting learning processes. Nevertheless, the model gives teachers many useful starters for considering how information can be structured to facilitate learning. Ref: The University Of New England http://www. Nun. Du. Greek and Roman Art

Greek and Roman Art Art has changed a great deal since it began many centuries ago. Centuries, however, are not necessary to notice the small changes that are evident even between cultures of similar times. Such is the case with the Greeks and Romans. Both cultures had exquisite pieces of art, but they were very different from each other. The amazing thing about art is that no matter how many differences exist, it is still beautiful in its own sense. There are also a number of similarities that are evident with these two cultures as well, but the point that will be focused on is the differences that are found between Greek and Roman art. The pieces that will be focused on from the Greeks are Black-Figured Psykter and Red-Figured Kylix Depicting a Young Athelete, and from the Romans are Mummy Portrait of a Man and Mummy Portrait of a Young Woman. The Roman Portraits are located at The Menil Collection in Houston.Mummy portrait of a young woman, 2nd century, Louv...The Mummy Portrait of a Man is from the F ayum region in Egypt. It was painted about 150-200 B.C. It is painted in encaustic on wood, and is a Fayum portrait. The Mummy Portrait of a Young Woman is also from the Fayum region and painted in encaustic on wood. This portrait was painted about 150-200 B.C. The term Fayum portrait is actually derived from a Coptic word meaning " The land of the lake," which refers to the artificial Lake Qarun. This lake was a project of the kings of the Twelfth Dynasty, and it was this lake that made a desert area of about 100 kilometers into one of the most fertile areas in Egypt. It was such an amazing feat that the lake still to this day provides this region water keeping it fertile. The purpose...

Roman Empire Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Roman Empire - Essay Example 136 ) marks a significant episode in Rome’s military history, for they nearly lost the war to Hannibal, a great Carthaginian general. With the defeat of Hannibal at Zama by the Roman general Scipio, and the experience gained during the war, Rome appears to have learnt a lot from it and harbored bitter feelings at least for Carthage for the damages Hannibal caused; ravaging much of their homeland and leaving it in a deplorable state. The effect of this was to be seen in the manner in which Rome later formulated strategies, for tactical reasons, in handling her allies and foes in an attempt to expand and consolidate her empire. Indeed, it is the Punic wars that saw the rise of the Roman Empire and echoed the thud falling of the republic. With the fall of Carthage, The Romans inflicted severe punishment on her, an attempt which was meant to ensure that Carthage remained subservient. In the treaty signed between the two, Carthage agreed to Scipio’s terms which required her to pay Rome an indemnity of 10,000 talents in the subsequent five decades. In addition, Carthage was not to enter into any war without Rome’s consent and was to surrender her navy; all her warships and elephants (Koeller 2005).This defeat, coupled with the unfriendly Scipio’s terms, humbled Carthage and the Romans felt that the punishment rendered her toothless and that she was never to bite again, leave alone bark at Rome. In using this approach, Rome successfully managed to tame and robe Carthage of her political power making her to coil her tail, but not for long. Rome was not done with Carthage just yet. In a move seen as one to expand its empire, Rome turned its rage on the Kingdoms that did offer support to Hannibal during the war. Such were the kingdom of Macedon and some parts of Greece .This also saw the Mediterranean islands and Spain cede to Rome. Another score card at Rome’s disposal that came into effect during this period was the adoption of a rapa cious and brutal foreign policy: diplomacy based on trickery rather than on true valor. Lewis and Reinhold 1990 p. 202-203 provides succinctly how Rome, with their act of deceit, hoodwinked king Perseus, tactfully, with a scheme that saw him disadvantaged in a war Rome undeservingly won. Reporting their mission to the senate, notes Reinhold and Lewis, Marcius and Atillus were acknowledged for having shown skillful management in the execution of their mandate and their mission was approved. Though not a unilateral senate decision (with the older senators not amused with this decision terming it contrary to Roman traditions), the cunning diplomacy saw the day. It is in light of the above perhaps, that ruthless oppression became synonymous to Roman rule as seen in the acts of such individuals as Servius Salpicius Galba, the praetor of Farther Spain. Galba, during the war with the Lusitanians, committed a terrible atrocity, one which Reinhold terms as ‘treacherous annihilation of a disarmed populace.’ Disguised as a peace maker and a sympathizer to the Lusitanians, Galba cunningly laid a snare in which his prey unsuspectingly got trapped. Defenseless and disadvantaged as they were, the Lusitanians were easily slewed by the Roman soldiers. This unfriendly Rome’s foreign policy subjected onto uninviting kingdoms appears to have worked in Rome’
